is drone like Boris where they will play the same really dark, slow, heavily distorted guitar riffs with a bunch of a feedback for like 10 minutes?

i actually don't see what was so dumb about sonson's question, to answer it flatly ~ yes. even though your description was lazy i'm pretty sure this is what you think it is haha.

Also, I am down with Emeralds, cause I dig the super low and slow analog synth drones lately.

wait, what album are you talking about? i'm not familiar with Emeralds at all, but low, slow & analog sounds siiiiiiiiick
(links are appreciated & increase the value of this thread)

Sonson's question isn't facepalm-worthy, just naïve. I think of drone music as the literal interpretation of the word "drone," anything that's long/continuous/sustained. In the case of Southern Lord acts, guitar feedback does greatly help. but the problem with my interpretation is that there's a huge gray area where things easily get confused with ambient music. i circumnavigate this problem by not giving two shits about genres or labels entirely.

Eternal Tapestry - not not fun (i know that that's the label but it's tagged as that being the album name..noclue)
all i really know about the band is that there are 2 members from jackie o motherfucker, i really like the song 'newdawn' off of this. offers a lot of bright and rough noises and i especially am diggin the guitar tones throughout.

Yeah, I hate it when ppl " :boxxy: " because you dont get something TECHNICALLY accurate but you basically got the gist of it. Plus I was ASKING if thats what it was, not claiming it.

Basically, Ratking go suck a cock

I've got one Emeralds record and it's alright. Dunno what it's called. Downloaded something else of theirs and much preferred it though.

it's a pretty rad album too. i'm a bit sad because it's only available as an LP, because that means if i buy it it'll cost $20, and i'm broke as hell

this thread gives me a headache
most of the artists on here aren't drone
most of them would fit better in the ambient thread
some of them (like emeralds, growing, and a lot on ratkings list) I wouldn't consider ambient or drone in general
drone also DOES consider bands like boris and instrumental drone
and if I made a giant list of artists I love no one would truly care
I think I just quit mumblings

I've never heard eternal tapestry
Robedoor, kinda like growing and emeralds, certainly has stuff I would consider drone (their split with Pocohaunted comes to mind)
Most of the stuff around like that reminds me more of noise than anything.
I have a pretty strict definition of drone though
and I definitely don't consider Fennesz or Tim Hecker drone

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm i think you're being a little strict here. i dont think i've ever heard growing or emeralds referred to as noise but this is pretty much splitting hairs with these genres~to me at least.

I'm probably biased but these bands seem like they took some method and style from Black dice and tried to smooth it out, taking some wall of sound and feedback techniques from Fennesz and Tim Hecker
I would consider something like "Allegory of Allergies" drone but all the newer emeralds is too experimental and distant from the basis of what drone should be

Drone, to me, is swells and waves.
